Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS)
Flagstaff is home to over 50 miles of shared-use, non-motorized pathways that are ideal for exploring the town with your own two feet or on a bicycle. About half of the trails are paved, while the other half is hard-packed dirt trails. The FUTS offers a diverse experience for both the Flagstaff local and visitors. Trails can take you to the center of downtown, where delicious local cuisine and shopping can be found, while others can lead you to beautiful natural places- canyons, grasslands, meadows and forests, all within the urban area of Flagstaff.
Flagstaff is home to some of the best hiking trails in Northern Arizona. Whether you’re looking to scale the tallest peak in Arizona, or just looking to enjoy the natural beauty of our pine forests, there are hundreds of trails for your enjoyment.
Climb Mt. Humphrey’s
The tallest peak in Arizona, the Mt. Humphrey summit sits at 12,633 feet. The trail totals about 8.25 miles round trip and gives incredible views of Northern Arizona. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Grand Canyon! The trailhead is only 12 short miles from Conifer House, making it an ideal day for the adventure-seeking guest!
Interested in hiking on the mountain, and not going to the top? Mt. Humphrey’s has several beautiful hikes that circumvent the mountain. The Aspen Loop takes you into some beautiful Aspen groves, or you can hop onto the Arizona Trail for breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Hike Mt. Elden
If you love hiking and exploring loved, local trails, the Mt. Elden trail system is for you! Comprised of over 15 different trails, its ideal for any level of hiker. Trails interconnect all over the San Francisco Peaks, allowing hikers to begin at Conifer House and hike all the way to the top of Mt. Elden if they desire! Only 3.8 miles from Conifer House, the Mt. Elden Lookout Trail is your starting point for any number of trails around Mt. Elden!

Explore Ancient Civilizations and Hike Walnut Canyon
If the history of the area intrigues you, take a trip out to Walnut Canyon! There you can hike through ruins of early Native American tribes and see the natural beauty of the area. If you’re looking for a nice hike after, you can hop onto the Arizona Trail all the way out to Fisher Point.
Fish, Paddleboard, Kayak
Enjoy being by or in the water? Lake Mary is a beautiful area to escape the bustling town and enjoy the serenity of being near water. Just 10 miles outside of town, Lake Mary is the perfect retreat to fish, paddleboard, or kayak and enjoy some beautiful views!
Snowshoe, Ski/Snowboard, Snow-mobiling!
If winter sports are more your style, we’ve got you covered! We’re located just 12 miles from Arizona Snowbowl where you can enjoy a day on the slopes! Looking to cross-country ski or snowshoe? Enjoy the FUTS right outside our back door, or venture out to the Flagstaff Nordic Center, where you can enjoy snowshoeing with a breathtaking view of the peaks! The Lodge at Mormon Lake also offers snow-mobiling tours in the winter if you’re looking for some motorized excitement!
